Canada’s roster for the 2022 Olympic hockey tournament in Beijing has a connection to the Powell River Kings.

Daniel Carr, who played for the Kings during the 2009/2010 BC Hockey League season, was one of the 14 forwards officially named to the roster, which includes a combination of youth and experience, with Carr somewhere in the middle.

2010 gold medalist and 2006 Stanley Cup champion (Carolina Hurricanes) Eric Staal (37) is the oldest player named to the team. Anaheim Ducks prospect Mason McTavish, who turns 19 on January 30, is the youngest. McTavish was also a member of Canada’s team at the IIHF World Junior Championship, which was cancelled due to COVID-19 on December 29 after four days of play.

Carr has played for four NHL teams since 2015, including Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, Vegas Golden Knights, and most recently, Washington Capitals in 2020/2021.

In 117 NHL games, the 30-year-old has scored 16 goals and added 21 assists for 37 points.

After his time in Powell River, Carr spent four years at NCAA Division 1 Union College (ECAC). In addition to stints in the NHL, he has skated with five American Hockey League teams (Hamilton Bulldogs, Saint John’s Ice Caps, Laval Rocket, Chicago Wolves and Milwaukee Admirals) during his professional career.

With the Kings, Carr scored 25 goals and added 28 assists over 45 regular season and playoff games. He currently plays for Lugano in the Swiss-A League, averaging just under a point per game.

Canada’s quest for gold begins February 10 against 2018 Olympic silver medalists Germany. Canada will also face the United States on February 12 and host club China on February 13 during round-robin play.
