CUPE out with list of endorsed candidates for the Tri-Cities

CUPE is the biggest union in Canada with more than 715,000 members, representing unionized employees in a wide range of sectors.

The union representing hundreds of municipal workers in the Tri-Cities released its list of candidates that it is supporting in the civic election.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which has four locals in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody to represent unionized city employees, SD43 support and maintenance workers, as well as Coquitlam Public Library staff who are unionized, is backing the following contenders for mayor, council and the board of education:

Coquitlam

Port Coquitlam

  • Brad West (mayor, acclaimed)
  • Darin Nielsen (council)
  • Darrell Penner (council)

  • Steve Darling (council)

Port Moody

  • Meghan Lahti (mayor)
  • Amy Lubik (council)

CUPE is the biggest union in Canada with more than 715,000 members, representing unionized employees in a wide range of sectors.

It is a founding union of the Canadian Labour Congress, the umbrella organization for the Canadian labour movement.

Its national president is Mark Hancock, who served as president of CUPE local 498 in Port Coquitlam for 15 years.

General voting day for the civic election is Saturday (Oct. 15).
